Sampling of zooplankton in shallow waters off Concepción a few days ago detected the presence of an abundant copepod (planktonic crustacean) that has been described as an inhabitant of deep waters (> 1000 m). The species Spinocalanus sp. is being identified in zooplankton laboratories of the Millennium Institute of Oceanography and if it is confirmed, it represents an enigma to explain how it appeared in shallow waters.
It is relevant to point out that after more than 12 years of continuous sampling in the coastal area off Concepción, by IMO researchers, this species had not previously been found in shallow waters: less than 100 m.
On January 7, another day of Oceanography was developed in the second version of the Science Camp ChileVA! This time it was held at the Marine Biological Station of the University of Concepcion in Dichato.
The Scientific Camp was held on January 7, 2015 at the Marine Biological Station of the Department of Oceanography of the University of Concepción, in Dichato.
