Last March 22, San Pedro was the commune chosen to live the first Traveling Scientific Audiovisual Show (MACI) in 2017. The activity, organized by the Millennium Institute of Oceanography, continues to visit various establishments in the Biobío Region. On this occasion, 200 students from the Galvarino, Fraternidad and Amanecer San Carlos Colleges received the audiovisual sample.
On the occasion, MACI with its two versions for first and second cycle sought to encourage children with the curiosities of the sea. The little ones enjoyed chapters of the children's series "The Adventures of Ruka", then worked with the IMO monitors with explanatory sheets, figures of marine organisms, finger puppets, zooplankton samples and a trivia quiz with the knowledge learned . In the meanwhile, the students of second cycle saw a chapter of the series "The force of the sea", soon to experiment with the salinity and the temperature in the oceans. They also saw zooplankton samples and cemented the knowledge learned with a set of questions.
Alejandra Monsalves, professor of Natural Sciences at Colegio Fraternidad , assessed the theme of the activity. "In the sixth basic curriculum this subject is studied. We deal with water and water care. The activity is quite interesting, especially since they learn about plankton. This helps them to know new realities and expand their knowledge, "said the teacher.
Belén Franco, marine biologist and member of the IMO Extension team, made a positive balance of the audiovisual sample. "We had a reach of more than 200 students of basic education. In addition, 3 different schools attended, so we expand our teaching network for collaboration and interaction in future activities. Finally, it was important to take this activity to a locality near the sea that we had not previously attended with MACI, which was reflected in the interest of most children and teachers"said Belén.
The activity was attended by the IMO monitor team led by: Evelyn Bustos, Johanna Medellín, Daniel Veloso, Pamela Fierro and Katerin Aniñir. It should be noted that MACI reached different communities in the Region of Biobío in 2016, in addition to Antofagasta, Valparaíso and Punta Arenas. The activity is also framed under the slogan "A sea of wonders", an initiative born with Explora Biobío and other research centers of the Universidad de Concepción, on the occasion of the "Year of the Oceans."
